FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ISRAEL: RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY FOR FACIAL PARALYSIS

Another unique operation has been performed at Ichilov Medical Center – a microsurgical intervention to correct spastic facial deformity caused by facial paralysis. Just two days after the surgery, the patient was discharged from the hospital.

Facial paralysis affects two out of a thousand people. Individuals with this condition face numerous difficulties: they cannot close their eyes, leading to pain and dryness; they struggle with eating and speaking properly. All of these challenges contribute to a depressed mood, poor well-being, and often lead to depression. Alina Davidova, a 50-year-old patient at Ichilov, experienced these issues firsthand. “I went from being a well-groomed, beautiful woman who loved company and socializing to being a wreck,” recalls Alina. “I didn’t know where to find the strength.”

However, Alina learned about Professor Eyal Gur, the head of the Microsurgery Department at Ichilov Medical Center, a globally renowned specialist in plastic surgery, who helps patients suffering from such conditions. “I thought I had nothing to lose, so I made an appointment with him. After the examination, I left with a tremendous sense of relief – the professor said there was hope and that he could help me.”

The eight-hour surgery was performed by Professor Gur and Dr. Daniel Kedar, a microsurgery specialist. The doctors used a special nerve stimulation device to locate the damaged facial nerve in Alina, identify the areas responsible for eye and mouth movement. As a result, the specialists at Ichilov were able to significantly alleviate the symptoms Alina had been suffering from. Two days later, she was already back home.

According to Professor Gur, this type of surgery can be a great solution for patients with facial paralysis, relieving them of pain and discomfort.
