“I am the Director of Head and Neck Surgery Department at the Ichilov Medical Center. Oftentimes, I have to operate on patients with head and neck cancer. Head and neck cancer affects the patient’s everyday life significantly. It influences all those functions that make a person human.
Fundamental speech, intake of food, swallowing, the ability to smell and generally use the sensory organs – all of this is natural to a person, and this is why no-one pays any special attention to these functions. Meanwhile, all the organs responsible for these functions are located in the head and neck area.
I spend a lot of time with my patients and try to explain all the recommendations in simple words. I elaborate on how the surgery is better or worse than other treatment methods. I explain everything just how it is, without embellishment. I have been blessed with working with outstanding physicians specializing in medical and radiation oncology, pathology, radiology, and supportive therapy. We study all the aspects of the disease and analyze the potential effectiveness of each cancer treatment method.
Advanced surgical techniques used in head and neck cancer treatment include robotic surgery. The number of robot-assisted surgical procedures is on the rise now.
As for head and neck surgery, the robot helped us reach the back of the throat that had earlier been inaccessible by hands or conventional instruments. Nowadays, these surgical procedures are performed with the help of a robot, and some patients have no scars left because the physician operates through the mouth cavity.”
