INNOVATIONS: NEW METHODS OF TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSIS IN TOP ICHILOV
The EOS System creates a full-length 3D scan of the skeleton in 25 seconds
Unlike previous generation machines, the new X-ray EOS system creates a complete digital scan of the skeleton from head to toe within one 25-second scanning session.
The significant reduction of radiation exposure for the patient is confirmed by clinical trials. The new machine is used to examine children.
Spinal surgeons and orthopedists from the Top Ichilov Clinic use the EOS system to plan scoliosis treatment in children and adults and assess the degree of lower extremity deformation due to fractures or congenital birth defects. The EOS X-rays is also used to plan knee replacement and hip replacement procedures.
3D print of personalized implants in the context of your individual anatomy
The Top Ichilov physicians successfully perform surgery that involves insertion of 3D implants made with a medical printer. The implant is based on a 3D model that perfectly corresponds with the specific anatomy of your body. Clinical trials show that 3D print reduces the duration of surgical intervention and increases its accuracy.
The new method is used for traumatic injuries and bone tumors. It helps preserve the affected limb and its functions in cases where patients previously faced the threat of disability.
The Stryker robotic system implants artificial knee joints
The Stryker robotic system is used for knee replacement. The system provides 3D visualization of the joint. Special software helps determine the best implant location.
During surgery, the doctor uses the robotic arm to shape the bone in strict accordance with the plan. In case of discrepancy between the plan and procedure, the robot stops working. High precision unattainable for “manual” joint replacement is the main advantage of the robotic system.
As a result, the number of revision procedures within the first 5 years after joint replacement is reduced by 5.4%.

SURGICAL PROCEDURES IN THE TOP ICHILOV DEPARTMENT OF ORTHOPEDICS
Joint Replacement: Replacing Affected Joints
Joint replacement involves complete or partial removal of the affected joint and implantation of an artificial endoprosthesis. The procedure is done in the hospital, under general or epidural anesthesia. Epidural anesthesia usually involves sedation, or administration of a sedative drug. The patient stays in the hospital for up to 7 days depending on the type of joint replacement surgery.
Removal of the Herniated Disc through a Small Puncture
In most cases, the surgery involves removal of the affected part of the intervertebral disc. In the clinic, it is a minimally invasive procedure performed through a puncture about 2.5 cm in diameter. Inpatient care after surgery takes 12-24 hours. The rehabilitation process lasts for about 1 month; sports may be resumed in a few months.
Clinical trials show that the results of minimally invasive discectomy are comparable to the results of open surgery for the herniated disc. At that, the patients’ quality of life during rehabilitation is significantly higher.
Arthroscope Helps Visualize the Joint on a Large Screen During Surgery
Arthroscopy (arthroscopic surgery) is an outpatient procedure that helps visualize the joint for the surgeon to treat it. The technique involves use of an arthroscope, a tool about 0.5cm in diameter. Modern arthroscopes with a light and an optical system are also equipped with a tiny camera that sends pictures of internal structures onto the screen.
Arthroscopy is used to treat 6 joints:
The procedure is usually done on the outpatient basis or with 1 day of inpatient care. The clinical trial results show that hip arthroscopy is more effective than traditional treatment methods. This pertains to, for instance, femoroacetabular impingement.
The Top Ichilov surgeons perform all types of joint and spine surgical procedures in children:
- Complex surgical interventions for severe scoliosis;
- Unique surgery for congenital limb and joint deformities, including bone length correction;
- Surgical treatment for hip dysplasia, etc.
For bone cancer in children, the Top Ichilov Clinic experts perform limb preservation surgery and use special endoprostheses that can “grow” with the child.
