“Within the last 20 years, obesity has turned into a significant problem for all developed countries. Fortunately, healthy lifestyles, balanced nutrition and sports are very popular nowadays. Since 2000s, people have been losing a lot of weight. A person can lose weight naturally, by eating healthy food and staying active. There are, however, some other methods including laparoscopic gastric banding and other surgical procedures that help lose weight fast.
After a significant weight loss, many people find excess skin. The skin may sag in any body area: on the neck, arms, abdomen, buttocks, thighs. In the last 15 years, there appeared new plastic surgery techniques aimed at eliminating the undesirable consequences of weight loss.
When people come to us after losing weight, we determine whether their current body mass is stable. The weight should remain stable for at least 6 months after the procedure. This usually ensures success with plastic surgery.
There are multiple plastic surgery techniques that can help patients after a significant weight loss. Such procedures as face and neck lift, arm lift, abdominoplasty, buttock lift, breast lift, and various types of thigh lift, are the most popular. Oftentimes, we have to combine lifts and implants. For instance, if the patient is planning to have a breast lift, we can offer not only mastopexy, but also implant placement. The same principle works for sagging buttocks: we may recommend both a lift and an implant placement.
The belt lipectomy, or lower body lift, is the most popular procedure for people who have lost a lot of weight. It combines an abdominoplasty and a buttock lift. The procedure leaves a circular scar that goes around the entire trunk below the waistline.
Most patients who have lost weight do not need liposuction. However, it may be recommended if some areas of the body did not respond to weight loss measures.
Most patients have to choose the most appropriate procedures from a rather lengthy list. At that, the plastic surgeon gives the utmost priority to the patient’s safety.”
